Shuya is the capital of Russian Christmas, a merchant and industrial town where above all the soviet anti-religious experiments took place. It is exactly the town which gave name to the Russian tsar Vasily Shuisky.
The enterprises founded back then in tsarist Russia continue to operate. These are: Shuiskaya Vodka Plant and Shuisky Chintz Manufactory.
1
Shuya is Konstantin Balmont's birthplace, one of the Silver Age poets. The first monument to the poet has also been erected here.
2
The Resurrection Cathedral bell is the highest detached campanile in Europe. For many years the wonderworking Shuya-Smolensk icon of the Virgin has been stored in the cathedral. Peter I and Alexander II came here to pray in front of it.
3
After the October Revolution Shuya has become a platform for anti-religious experiments. A general rehearsal for the bombing of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was held here, and the so-called "Shuisky affair" was the beginning of violent repression against the Orthodox Church in Soviet Russia. In remembrance of these events a monument to those who died for the faith was erected in the town.
